Great DVD about one of the most controversial, by the way one of my favourite and surely one of the greatest wrestler of all time.
The earlier matches are funny, good to see some old fights like vs. Mr. T at WrestleMania 2 or his rivalry with Hulk Hogan ; but honestly 25 years later it looks hilarious much than serious.
Well, his match at WrestleMania VIII against Bret Hart is incredible, historic match for the intercontinental championship. The "Hollywood Back Lot Brawl" vs. Goldust is creepy brutal, a true fight between two eccentric wrestlers, The Hot Rod was unleashed like ever before, my personal favorite match. The last match against Hollywood Hogan is damn good too, cool to see WCW fragment here, with NWO Hogan, The Giant (...) ; and what a great match.
The story documentary is very good.
The Piper's Pit chapter absolutely kicks ass, a "see-or-die" than prove the genius inside and outside of Roddy Piper.
A classic that must appears in any wrestling collection worthy of the name.

A DVD not to be missed, roddy piper was a wrestler I first despised because of his heel image but then I grew to love his ring presence and wrestling ability. If you buy this you will not be let down.
I started watching WWF/E around Wrestlemania 6 so I missed a lot of Roddy's early career. This DVD set showed me just how good Roddy was and brought back some great memories, including his mania 8 match with Bret Hart. Great buy for wrestling fans old and new.
Quite interesting. I mean I enjoy watching the history of superstars (especially older superstars) because there's a lot to look back on! The main match that I was looking forward to in this 3 Disc DVD set was one of my favorite matches that had taken place at Wrestlemania VIII in 1992 where Roddy Piper faced Bret Hart for the IC Championship belt. Great match!
I also enjoyed all his early history talk and a few of his Pipers Pit scenes.

"Rowdy" Roddy Piper one of the best talkers in the business and one of the greatest legends as well! Piper was revolutionary back in the 80's with the segment Piper's pit,and set the standard to future segments like the cutting Edge,Carlito's cabana;highlight reel with Chris Jericho and so many others! He had also some great matches like the one against Bret Hart at Wrestlemania 8 in 1992! Buy this, if you want to learn more about this one of a kind icon!
Rowdy Roddy Piper was one of the best talkers in the business. This DVD collection shows this effectively with a sizeable collection of Piper's Pit segments. This features some of Hotrods classic lines, such as "You don't throw rocks at people with machine guns." What this means though, is that the match quality is not up to the standard of some of the other collections. While there are some classic and historial confrontations, it the Pit segments that make the DVD worthwhile.
The biography is interesting but feels slightly patchy, mainly due to the fact that Piper would often leave the WWF to star in movies. There are many historical moments covered, including the first three Wrestlemanias and Piper's dislike of Mr T.
Roddy Piper, as this DVD suggests more than once, was never the greatest in-ring worker to grace the squared circle, but boy...he could talk up a storm. The charisma and magic of "Hot Rod", evident even to the present day, is well and truly alive in this engaging and entertaining 3-disc set.
The documentary portion of the collection is a nimble look through Piper's rich and varied career, taking us from his early days in Portland all the way up to some of his latest returns to the WWE. The sheer wealth of archive footage makes for great viewing even if, at times, the majority of it is based on his out of the ring activities, specifically Piper's Pit. Indeed his WWF career up to his "retirement" at WrestleMania III is largely covered by four matches (three of which are WM bouts - the other is the War To Settle The Score from just prior to the first WM). His many WWF returns focus on his Intercontinental Title run, his interminable feud with Jerry Lawler (both men admit that their match at 1993's King Of The Ring was awful) and his bizarre battle with Goldust at WrestleMania XII, whilst his WCW stint is largely confined to his Starrcarde 1996 victory over Hulk Hogan. Still Piper's engaging commentary throughout keeps the pace up, even if it's sometimes difficult to believe EVERYTHING that he is saying.
In terms of extra's there are reams of matches and promo's over the remaining two discs. The standout matches are probably Piper's bloody Dog Collar Match with Greg Valentine from Starrcade 1993 and his WrestleMania VIII match with Bret Hart. I think it's fair to say however that few would relish watching all the matches on this collection back-to-back. Similarly, whilst a lot of the Piper's Pit promo's that make up the majority of the third disc are entertaining, there are only so many you can watch in one sitting.
Anyone who was entertained by Piper in the 80's and 90's will thoroughly enjoy this trip down memory lane. One of the best-talkers ever, Piper's influence on certain aspects of the business is still prevalent to this day but as this DVD set proves; many may have attempted to imitate Piper, but there will only ever be one "Hot Rod".

Born To Controversy, was the first WWE dvd I bought I saw it in HMV and picked it up because I am a massive fan of Roddy Piper and 80's/90's wrestling, I was pleased with the product. The documentry is both entertaining and insightful giving a good view into the life of Hot Rod himself. The extras are also fantastic with a disk of Piper's best matches including his match against Bret Hart at Wrestlemania VIII which I personally rate as Roddy's best match and also a personal favourite of mine. The third and final disk contains some of the best Pipers Pit moments including the infamous Jimmy Snuka and Journeyman Frank Williams interviews.
If purchased I doubt any wrestling fan will be disappointed.

I found this DVD in a bargain bin alittle while back and brought it based on its price as opposed to any pre planning of the purchase. I have always liked Roddy but never enought to want to watch a couple of discs on him. However after watching it I wondered why I hadn't brought it before. Roddy is a genious. He is better on the mic than 99% of todays "talent", he is more intense than Cena will ever be. You only have to watch "war to settle the score" to see how an intense- full speed start to a match can take a feud to the next level. A great DVD and with some fantastic Piper's Pit moments and memorable matches.
The bottom line is if I had known how good this DVD was I would have paid full price any day of the week. Buy it while it's on offer... you won't regret it.

Piper is one of the rare legends in the business who, regardless of never making it to the top, is seen as a world champion by many. This DVD boxset takes you from the beginning of his badly started journey, right through the whole of his established career.
For me, the most interesting part of his story would have to be his real rivalry with Mr.T and how it came across through the lens at the time. Very rarely do these documentaries reveal such problems in an honest fashion, but this manages it very well.
A must have for any fan of wrestling, especially those who watched it through the 80's and early 90's...
Just when they think they got answers, I change the questions!
I've never really been a fan of Roddy as a wrestler, he never really had any technical ability as far as i could see. Roddy's ability came in the shape of a microphone, he could talk for "Scotland" on one of those things lol. The story of Roddy is an interesting one and is told well as in all Silvervision/WWE dvd's. The best of Roddy like i say is and was when he opens his mouth and there are some classic moments in the pipers pit because of this. There is the famous coconut moment with Supperfly Snukka and another funny moment when he insults a helpless undercard wrestler.
Would i recommend this dvd?, well to Roddy fans obviously!. I don't however think this dvd will suit everyone, be cautious on the purchase of this one!.
this dvd box is good it's got a good documentary, some not bad matches and some great pipers pits on it. if you love piper you will love this.
This DVD doesn't lack anything, However the Piper's Pit segments from 03 are boring. This was not a good year for WWE although wrestlemania and summerslam 03 are brilliant. You can see how entertaining Piper is and what a shame it was to see him on smackdown with a loser like sean o'haire. It is a must have for any fan of roddy piper

Very enjoyable DVD! As mentioned, Hot Rod wasn't the greatest technical wrestler ever, so the matches, more often than not, aren't particularly good. However, Piper vs. Valentine, the WrestleMania I main event, Piper vs. Adonis, Piper vs. Hart and Piper vs. Goldust are all enjoyable matches or brawls. The chain match, in fact, is an all-time classic. The biography part gets Piper across as genuinely likeable. And, of course, the collection of Piper's Pits on disc three are the highlight of the set, especially the ones with Jimmy Snuka, Frankie Williams and Bruno Sammartino. You can't go wrong with this one if you like 1980s World Wrestling Federation.
When wrestling fans discuss with each other who were the greatest Superstars never to hold a major promotions version of the World Heavyweight Championship, 'Rowdy' Roddy Piper is usually always one of the first to be mentioned. For me, Hot Rod was never a particularly great in-ring talent, but his sheer charisma over many years in the sport has seen him be honoured in the 2005 WWE Hall Of Fame, and his bonkers-but-entertaining interviews and promos have been some of the most loved and influential in the business since the early 1980s.
For good, quality wrestling action, Born To Controversy: The Roddy Piper Story, suffers the same problems as the Hulk Hogan Anthology: namely that it's main subject matter hasn't actually had that many classic matches. But it's the out-of-the-ring stuff that's the real selling point in this 3-DVD set, most notably the many Piper's Pit segments collected in this package. The personal and professional history of Roddy Piper is a fascinating one, too, as we learn about Roddy's family, and, of course, his lauded movie career.
With some enjoyable bonus footage and fascinating comments from Roddy himself and other WWE personnel, Born To Controversy is a decent biography for any fan of the former Intercontinental and WCW United States Champion, or for anyone just wishing to see more of the outrageously entertaining history of one of pro-wrestling's most colourful characters.
