The night Rocky Marciano challenged Jersey Joe Walcott for the world heavyweight title in the Municipal Stadium, Philadelphia, on 23 September 1952 a legend was born. Walcott, the grim-faced old boxing master who was the oldest man ever to hold the championship, predicted that he would take Marciano, the unbeaten, raw, knockout artist from Massachusetts, to school. Marciano, as polite and gentle outside the ring as he was mean and ruthless inside it, just wanted one chance to land the right hand he called his Suzy-Q... just one chance. Soon after this classic battle, another legend began in the American 'South', in Louisville, Kentucky - when a 12-year-old boy named Cassius Marcellus Clay was so outraged by the theft of his new bicycle that a policeman sent him to a boxing gym. And he in turn became Muhammad Ali, the most exhilarating, charismatic champion of them all. In Muhammad Ali, The Young Champion, we take a journey through his early life and see his world title defences against Floyd Patterson, George Chuvalo and Henry Cooper.
