Nobody... but nobody... had a career as exciting as that of Muhammad Ali. From his gold medal at the Rome Olympics in 1960 to the night he rolled back the years to win his rematch with Leon Spinks almost two decades later, Ali was a superstar. The man born Cassius Marcellus Clay in Lousville, Kentucky, was extrovert, funny and controversial. His political stance against the Vietnam war cost him three years in exile and millions of dollars, but he came back to beat George Foreman and cement his greatness over his three-fight series with Smokin' Joe Frazier. The man who followed Ali as the best heavyweight in the world was Larry Holmes. He learned his trade as Ali's sparring partner in the 1970s, came of age by beating Ken Norton in a thrilling 15-round fight in 1978 and went on to beat the rapidly declining Ali in 1980, a victory that he said gave him no pleasure. Holmes' reputation suffered because he followed Ali but for seven years he was the best heavyweight in the world. He was one of the greats.
