wwe had a great 2008 on ppv, serving up enjoyable ppvs all year (the only exception was survivor series), unfortunately 2009 didnt continue the standard, wwe produced a number of substandard supercards, especially in the last quarter, hell in a cell 2009 was one of the best out of a bunch of rag bag ppvs late in the year.
i am slightly worried about wwes new gimmick loaded ppv formula, making new stars for fresh headline attractions should be their aim in order to improve ppv buy rates, not trying to entice people with gimmick matches. in my opinion wwe should promote no more than one with a absolute maximum of two, hell in a cell matches in a year if it wants to preserve the allure of one its most succesfull gimmick matches, (people need time to get over these feature attractions as fimiliarity creates boredome,) never mind a staggering 3 on 1 card, its also worth bearing in mind that 3 months later wwe is promoting "elimination chamber" apparently the most evil structure ever, i think i heard that on this ppv too.
fortunately there was plenty of talent on display who made the best of this silly concept, starting with the opener, cm punk v undertaker. this bout is kept short for a couple of reasons, firstly the undertaker is carrying a lot of injuries and it shows here as the he looks a different performer who stole the show at wrestlemania (he looked better than breaking point were he seemed in pain walking), secondly, due to the structure of the show, wwe needed to minimize interaction with the cage in an attempt to maintain enthusiasm for the later cell matches. lasting around 10 minutes, punk and taker have a decent and competitive match, during the closing stages the two men trade near falls and in a cool spot, punk counters "old skool" into a gts, but without a firemans carry proceeding it the audience fail to catch on and dont cheer when taker kicks out (or maybe they simply didnt think punk would win, they were right), in the end punk is finished off with a tombstone piledriver and taker is crowned new world champ. booking an undertaker victory here was a mistake, regardless of what happened backstage between these two, undertaker is injury plagued and in his mid 40s while punk was wwe only new headliner in 2009 and had proved to be a more than worthy main eventer with his self rightous straight edge character. (jeff hardy, wwes rising star of 2008 had also left the company by this point) wwe and undertaker should have seen the sense in putting punk over.
following up is good match, featuring john morrison v dolph ziggler for the ic strap. the opening and final minutes are strong, showcaseing refreshing amatuer style mat wrestling, which the crowd unfortunately didnt find as entertaining as i did,and athletic moves and counters, the middle section of the match (were the bad guy takes control) however is an array of rest holds and stalling, but the overall match is enjoyable.
in a suprise, mickie james and alicia fox put together a competent match by diva standards, fox is one of the few female wwe performers to show any wrestling capability. wisely the more popular and experienced mickie james takes the win.
the tag team title match was up next, carried by jericho and mysterio this encounter provides thrilling action, jericho deserves huge credit for making "jeri-show" work, i was was one of many irate people when big show walked out at night of champions to replace edge, but with jericho carrying him in the ring and on the mike hes proved not to be completely useless.big show scores the pin on mysteio after nailing him with his knockout punch as mysterio springboarded towards him.
john cena v randy take centre stage yet again in the second and worst cell match of the night. admittadly this is not a bad match but the phrase "overkill" does comes to mind, also making its way under the overkill banner is the fact that wwe booked another wwe title change here, when you have to change the belt around mutiple times to prolong storylines in order to fill ppvs, you have a problem, also this devalues the presitgue of the championship, randy orton picks up the win with his brutal and heavily promoted punt kick.
r truth v drew "no personality" mcintyre is filler, nothing to report here.
thankfully some up and coming talent gets an opportunity to shine next as kofi kingston faces miz and jack swagger in a three way for the us title. jack swager, who has unforunately fallen of the radar recently,(wwe could have the next kurt angle, who knows?) miz, who has shown geat skill in being very annoying, has improved greatly as a worker and is finally starting to recover from his sensless burial by john cena at "the bash", and the rapidly rising kofi kingston put together an enjoyable match , all three interacted well here, it stands to reason that kingston, who had a fued with randy orton upcoming would take the win.
the main event proved to be the best match of the night, dx v legacy have a superb and deeply compelling battle which contained briliant performances (dibiase and michaels especially), the story was legacy locking triple h out of the cell so they could double team michaels, who puts on an awesome selling display, his facial expressions and cries for help add incredible drama to the match, its a shame that wwe has banned blood (its now pg rated fyi), a juice job here would have kicked the suspense into overload in my opinion, rhodes and dibiase also play the roles of merciless assasins perfeclty, showing great intensity and realism. it was inevitable that triple h would eventually return, and when he does, hes equipped with bolt cutters, this portion contains are rare lapse in camera work from the producers(wwes production values are immaculate) instead of focusing on dibiases cobra clutch slam onto an erected chair, a brutal spot im sure you would agree, the camera pans to triple h wandering down the ramp, after triple h gains entry the end is near for legacy. in a great piece of story telling, dx lock dibiase out of the cell, (hey, he who lives by the sword) giving dx the opportunity to deliver a superkick/sledgehammer combo to finish off rhodes. fustratingly, as in the opening match, its the well established dx who go over, did they really need the win? instead of star bound ted dibiase and his partner cody rhodes.
overall, hell in a cell 2009 isnt likely to blow you away, but does deliver an excellent tag title match and a stunning main event.
