The first DVD in SilverVision's budget-priced Best of Raw and SmackDown series showcased some of the best matches seen on the Thursday/Friday Night brand between 2002-2005. First up was a World Tag Team Championship (then called the WWE Tag Team Championship, but not to be confused with the OTHER WWE Tag Team title that was created exclusively for SmackDown a few months later) bout between defending champs Billy Gunn and Chuck Palumbo, versus Edge and his special partner for Independance Day, Hollywood Hogan.

Ignoring the fact that Edge, a Canadian, was flying the American flag in the ring, this was a feelgood match with a predictable yet enjoyable finish that saw Hogan and Edge both hit Atomic Legdrops to capture the gold. This was Hogan's first ever Tag Team title win in his long career, and the SmackDown crowd on July 4, 2002 lapped it up.

Next up was another historically important match, as Rey Mysterio made his WWE debut on July 25, 2002 against long-time friend/rival Chavo Guerrero. After over a year of mainstream wrestling absence since the closure of WCW, SmackDown fans were eager to see the much-hyped first WWE match for the multi-time Cruiserweight Champion Mysterio. It was a decent bout, not as exciting as WCW's cruiserweight action, but Rey was a lot more agile and daring than he is today.

On August 1, 2002 two of Raw's most technically proficient Superstars made the transfer to SmackDown, as Chris Benoit and Eddie Guerrero faced the dream team of Undisputed Champion The Rock and Edge. A very good tag team encounter, with a surprise finish that saw The Rock, preoccupied by upcoming Summerslam opponent Brock Lesnar, tap out to Benoit's Crossface.

Jumping ahead almost a year to June 12, 2003 and a collosal encounter between SmackDown's WWE Champion Brock Lesnar and his arch-rival The Big Show. This was a reasonable encounter, memorable only really for the crazy ending that saw the ring collapse in a head following Lesnar's massive suplex to Big Show!

Fast forward eighteen months, to a fine match between best friends Eddie Guerrero and Rey Mysterio on January 6, 2005. This was one of the first of many matches in their series that lasted a big part of the year. Despite the rather poor-taste angles that were to be intertwined in the Guerrero-Mysterio programme, this is a great example of the legacy that Eddie's career left wrestling fans worldwide, in the year in which he passed away.

The final match is an exciting United States Championship match between defending champ Chris Benoit and Booker T, both former World Champions competing for a title that was almost as prestigious as the WWE or WCW Championships back on October 21, 2005. Both were babyfaces, although Sharmell, Booker's wife, had been hinting at a heel turn for some time, and confirmed it when she assisted her husband in winning the U.S title. At the time, Booker would claim ignorance, but we'd soon learn it was a ruse between the couple to mess with Benoit's head and, more importantly, relieve him of his championship.

This is a very worthwhile purchase for it's price, even with no particular trail of continuity. All the matches range from well above average to excellent, and SmackDown's Most Memorable Matches is, for me, the best DVD of all four volumes of this series.
