If I'm going to be honest, I have to admit that the only reason I purchased this box set was because of it's low price (Hey, it is a recession after all :) ). The Rock was never my "favourite wrestler" but I would always watch his matches/promo's because he is entertaining. Having said that, this compilation is a great addition to any wrestling fan's collection becuase it kicks off at the early stages of the Attitude Era in WWE and I was genuinly interested in seeing it. The documentary is insightful but it would have been so much more enjoyable to get interviews from "The Great One" as well as some of his opponents. Oh well, here are my match ratings:
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match
Hunter Hearst Helmsley vs. Rocky Maivia
RAW (13/02/97)
( 4/5: Great match between two up and coming WWE stars. Great work on both parts)
WWE Intercontinental Championship Match
Owen Hart vs. The Rock
RAW (06/04/98)
(3/5: Good work but I've always found Harts work to be quite bland)
King of the Ring Quarterfinal Match
Triple H vs. The Rock
RAW (22/06/98)
(4/5: Another great showing by both men here. You could see how far both had come since their first encounter)
WWE Championship Match (Final Round)
Mankind vs. The Rock
Survivor Series (15/11/98)
(3.5/5: Not a bad match but not his best work. Still very enjoyable)
Last Man Standing Match for the WWE Championship
Mankind vs. The Rock
St. Valentine%u2019s Day Massacre (14/02/99)
(4/5: Better than their Survivor Series match, mainly because of the match stipulation)
Ladder Match for the WWE Championship
Mankind vs. The Rock
RAW (15/02/99)
(3.5/5)
WWE Championship Match
Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock
WrestleMania XV (28/03/99)
(4/5: Great match. Great combatants. Great story)
Steel Cage Match
The Rock vs. Triple H
RAW (05/07/99)
(4.5/5: Fantastic Cage match: Exciting until the very end)
World Tag Team Championship
The Rock / Mankind vs. Undertaker / Big Show
RAW (30/08/99)
(3/5: Average match with very little involvement from Taker)
No Holds Barred Match
The Rock vs. Kane
SmackDown! (30/12/99)
(3.5/5: Nice TV match between Rock and Kane. Would have liked to see the match go a bit longer)
WWE Championship Match
Triple H vs. The Rock
Backlash (30/04/00)
(4.5/5: Yet another exceedingly enjoyable bout. The Rock arguably did his greatest work when against The Game. Both had come a long, long way by this point. McMahon involvement and surprise return all add to the experience)
Steel Cage Match for the WWE Championship
The Rock vs. Shane McMahon
RAW (01/05/00)
(3.5/5: Entertaining but hardly a classic)
WWE Championship Match
Kurt Angle vs. The Rock
No Way Out (25/02/01)
(5/5: A superb match against one of the greatest in-ring performers ever. Angle, like HHH, brought out the best in The Rock. Plus this sets up his match at WrestleMania X-7 with Stone Cold. Must-see without a doubt)
WCW Championship Match
Booker T vs. The Rock
SummerSlam (19/08/01)
(4/5: Very good, enjoyable match)
Undisputed WWE Championship Match
Chris Jericho vs. The Rock
Royal Rumble (20/01/02)
(4.5/5: Brilliant match between Rock and Y2J. This was at the height of Jericho's push and Rock does a fantastic job)
The Rock vs. Hollywood Hulk Hogan
WrestleMania X8 (17/03/02)
(5/5: Not a wrestling clinic by any means but the emotion of the fans more than make up for it. As great a moment as any in wrestling history. Truely a shocase of Icon vs Legend)
Triple Threat Match for the WWE Undisputed Championship
Kurt Angle vs. Undertaker vs. The Rock
Vengeance (21/07/02)
(5/5: As JR says later in the DVD, "As good a triple threat match as I can remember". Fast action, near falls, the works. All three are in their prime and they deliver BIG TIME)
The Rock vs. Eddie Guerrero
RAW (22/07/02)
(4/5: A very underrated bout that, had it gone longer, could have been a 5 star match. Great stuff)
Stone Cold Steve Austin vs. The Rock
WrestleMania XIX (30/03/03)
(4.5/5: Another fantastic match to add to the Rock/Austin WrestleMania Trilogy. In being Austin's last match, this has sentimental value as well as some comical moments courtesy of "The Great One". Near fall after near fall, finisher after finisher, this is definately a wrestling fan's match. Brilliant)
Overall, this DVD set far exceeded my expectations and the fact that it is being sold for ?9.99 is a huge plus. There are some fantastic moments and matches on this set (some of which were 4.5 to 5 stars). The extras were very funny and taking everything into consideration (price, content, quality), I would recommend this 3-Disc Set to every wrestling fan.
This is easily the best wwe dvd i've picked up so far this year the matches on it are awesome and there isnt a bad match on the dvd. my personal favorite matches on the dvd are the steel cage match with shane, the one vs Guerrero, Vs Angle and Vs hhh at backlash. I just wish they would have put one Benoit match on the dvd, there matches where nothing short of excellent, wwe and there censoring. Also having the football guy do the in between match commentary as a opposed to the rock doing it hurt it a little too, but minus those two problems i had with the dvd it is awesome.
